A Nursery Worth the Wait

Every project we take on is important to us. But every once in a while, a project comes along that has a story, a “why,” that’s extra special. This nursery is one of those rooms.

Our clients had been waiting a long time for this baby girl. Anyone who's been through the journey of trying to grow a family knows that when it finally happens, "excited" doesn't even begin to cover it, and there are many other emotions at play as well. We knew we needed to make this room as special as the story.

Here’s how we did it.

The Big Picture

When you walk in the nursery, you’ll see a stunning stylized poppy wallpaper with oversized blooms in warm taupes and whites, anchored by a blush-pink ceiling to carry the femininity throughout the space. Then, we added a washable (important in a nursery!) Oriental-style rug to double down on the room's gorgeous vintage look.

When designing a nursery, we totally understand the desire to get the tiniest versions of everything possible. It’s all just so cute! But, we hate to break it to you: babies don't stay babies. Our client selected furniture with this in mind, choosing a crib that converts into a toddler bed—the viral Namesake Abigail 3-in-1 crib.

The lighting in the room was also very intentional—there’s a sconce right next to the door and changing table, so you never have to flip on the overhead light during a middle-of-the-night diaper change. We placed a separate reading light above the recliner, offering a spot for nighttime readings and subdued feedings.

The nursery is connected to a guest room through a Jack-and-Jill bathroom that we also redesigned. We intentionally kept the look gender-neutral and elevated enough that if a sibling comes along someday, it won't need a full redesign no matter the gender. And if guests are using the adjacent room, it doesn't automatically scream “nursery.”

The Details

This is where we love working with clients to bring in those family heirlooms and personal touches that really bring a room to life. In this project, we incorporated Velveteen Rabbit artwork—a hot air balloon, a little bird, and a bunny—in gold frames. We added a gingham glider in the corner that, yes, looks adorable, but is also functional and comfy for late-night feedings. We made sure to add blackout curtains and shutters to the windows, also blending function and fashion.

The little finishing touches might have been our favorite part: MacKenzie-Childs butterfly details on the wall, crystal doorknobs on the closet, tiny pink bows on the clothes baskets, a family heirloom rocking horse, and passed-down clothes, the viral Sophia la Girafe teether… It all made the room extra special for an extra special little girl.
