One of the things we see most often with clients who've recently relocated: they move fast, they bring furniture that doesn't fit the new space, and then they're stuck with stuff that doesn’t perfectly fit the new digs. We can relate, we have been in the midst of a move ourselves!
You likely picked out things like furniture, drapes, and accents with a specific space in mind, and you’re one in a million of everything fits perfectly when you make a move. But, a move doesn’t have to mean “out with the old, in with the new,” and it certainly doesn’t mean you need to shop under pressure to fill your new home perfectly from day one.
Having a design plan before you move or buy anything saves you real money… and a lot of returns.
Start with What You Have
We start with furniture because it’s the largest physically and financially, then layer in easier-to-change things like window treatments, paint colors, lighting, and accessories. We love helping clients select the perfect textures, patterns, and wallpapers that seamlessly (and creatively) tie in things they already have and things that are shiny and new.
Furniture Tetris in Practice
We recently worked with clients who wanted the space to feel like them, not like a showroom or a rental. We didn’t change anything structural, no sledgehammers to walls or major cosmetic renovations. Instead, we painted one fireplace wall in the family room, installed ombre wallpaper behind the bookcases, and tied it all together with their furniture, new and old.
In the living room, the starting point was a piece of client-owned art above the fireplace. We pulled colors from it (bold with hints of teal), then added fabrics and accessories to framed the room rather than distract from it. Custom antique mirrors flank the fireplace with a large shell sconce centered between them to bounce light, and swivel chairs near the doors are strategically placed to open to the pool area on nice days.
To bring it all together, we scaled up the lighting with larger fixtures and added floor-to-ceiling window treatments with plenty of fabric to feel complete and beautiful. We loved the look so much, we turned the fabric into an exclusive Paige Williams Interior Design print, available for purchase here.
If you're settling into a new build or a new city and the space doesn't feel like yours yet, that's exactly what we do. Let's talk.
